Phileo Love

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12

Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

  • This Sunday, Pastor Steve continued our sermon series in First Thessalonians. This series is about how the Thessalonian church practiced their faith while under intense persecution by their community.

‘Phileo’ is the third and final kind of love that the Apostle Paul wrote about to the church in Thessalonica.

Pastor Steve challenged us to think about how each decision we make will impact the rest of the family of God.

He asked us to pray, “Lord, give me one way I can bless a brother or sister in Christ.” If you do, I’m certain God is going to give you an opportunity to do so.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICES

Read Scripture:

Read 1 Thessalonians 3 & 4, notice the three kinds of love talked about in 1 Thessalonians and what Paul has to be say about each of them:
Agape Love ( 1 Thess. 3:12), Eros Love (1 Thess. 4:3), Phileo Love (1 Thess. 4:9)

Memorize Scripture:
Together we are memorizing 1 Thessalonians 5:8

DISCUSSION GUIDE

Questions:
1) What is one word or phrase that they Holy Spirit highlighted for you during this teaching? Why?
Journal your thoughts and/or share this with someone else.

2) When did a decision you make impact the lives of others?

3) What are some ways you can make sure you’re extending phileo-love to those around you? Talk about this with someone you trust.

Prayer:
God, help me to consider how my life impacts the lives of those around me. Help me to ask ‘how will this impact my family, my church family and our testimony to the world? Help me to live my life in a way that reflects your grace, love, and mercy to those around me.
Amen.
