The Beauty of Repentance

  • Luke 5:27-32

After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.

Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

SPIRITUAL PRACTICES

Read Scripture:
Read: Matthew 9:9–13, Mark 2:13–17
Look for similarities and differences between these three gospels.

This week we encourage you to take time to repent: read Psalm 51… consider your sin, seek forgiveness, and live in the reality of the new life that God has called you into through faith in Christ.

Here’s a quick guide about how to develop this habit.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

Questions:
1) What did the Holy Spirit highlight for you during this teaching? Why?
Journal your thoughts and/or share this with someone else.

2) Have you made repentance a daily part of your life? If not, make a plan to adopt this practice into your routine. Share this with someone and ask them to check in with you regularly to see if you’re following through on your plan.

Prayer:
God, thank you for sending your Son to die for MY sin, help me to not keep my sin in the dark but expose it to your light by confessing it to you and seeking forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
