Children of God

  • The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

Personal Reflection Questions:

  1. Reflect on the concept of spiritual darkness mentioned in verse 9. How does the light of Christ offer hope and transformation in those situations?

  2. Pastor Paul talked about receiving Jesus and believing in His name. How does this change the way you think about salvation?

  3. Have you personally received Christ as the light in your life?
If no, take the time to pray how God would have you respond to His Word. Perhaps today is your day to receive and believe in Jesus?
If yes, reflect on specific moments or decisions that marked your acknowledgment of Jesus as the true light. Thank him for being the true light.

Group Reflection Questions:

  1. Considering verse 12, discuss how the act of receiving Christ and believing in His name change the way you interact with others. Discuss the difference of having a shared belief in Christ changes the way you experience community.

    2. Verse 10 mentions that the world did not recognize the true light, referring to Jesus. Where do you see this in the world today? How can you stand together to engage in the mission of reflecting God’s true light to the world?
